THE HEART OF SELF-CARE

You are just as worthy of care as everyone else in your life.

What is Self-Care?

How are you doing emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually? If you’re not functioning well in one of these areas, self-care is doing whatever you need to do to recharge yourself and avoid burnout. Your body, brain or heart needs to recharge.

Is self-care selfish?

One of the most common metaphors for self-care is a cup—if your cup is already empty, you can’t give to others.  On the flip side, at an extreme, there is a risk of prioritizing your own self-care to the point that it could be detrimental to other people in your life. We must find a balance.

Whatever practices you decide to take on, remember—you are just as worthy of care as everyone else in your life.

Financial Self-care

Like any kind of self-care, financial self-care looks different for everyone, therefore making sure you take the right steps for you (and your particular financial situation) is very important. Financial self-care isn’t always simple, but a little modification can go a long way.

Financial self-care is not about your net worth, but about taking control of your financial knowledge and, if possible, the financial situation. Tension and fear about money may never disappear but your financial situation can greatly improve if you put in the time and care.

Self-care is taking the time to look inward and understanding what habits work for you. As you practice your new self-care habits, in time they will become part of your routine and part of your character.

Wellness and  Self-care

Visiting a wonderful spa tends to come up a lot in conversations about self-care. Maybe that’s the reason why the subject of self-care is sometimes trivialized — as though self-care was frivolous and dispensable. It’s not.

The heart of self-care is how you show up in your life every day. It should be more about:

  • Treating yourself with respect – understanding and upholding your boundaries, saying no when needed, showing yourself the kindness that you offer others.
  • Taking responsibility for how you approach each day – checking in with yourself, your mindset, and how you’re feeling, and tweaking your day accordingly.
  • Challenging yourself sufficiently to trigger adventures, but not enough to create unrealistic expectations and almost certain failure and exhaustion.
  • Being present in your life so you are free to enjoy it in all its colorful / wild glory.
  • Eating and living to nourish your body and soul.
  • Paying as much attention to your tired cues as you do to your children’s.
  • Showing up and doing your best notwithstanding the outcome.
  • Committing to learning and developing a little bit every single day.
  • Discarding the guilt for doing all of the above!
